Silica/Silica Composites Through Electrophoretic Infiltration - Effect of Processing Conditions on Densification of Composites

Abstract: Ceramic matrix composites are high performance, high temperature materials of scientific as well as technical interest. During the last decade there has been great interest in development of oxide composites for structural as well as electrical applications. “…Chen et al developed a vacuum-assisted liquid phase infiltration process with suspension of silica and the addition of a non-ionic surfactant to enhance the densification of 3D SiO 2f /SiO 2 materials, resulting in a density of 1.65 g/cm 3 with a flexural strength of about 75 MPa [3,4]. Additionally, an electrophoretic infiltration process of colloidal silica sol was applied to fabricate SiO 2f /SiO 2 composites, which showed a low density of 1.50-1.65 g/cm 3 strength just about 25-60 MPa due to the sensitive surface of glass fibers [5,6].
