Silica–Polypyrrole Hybrids as High‐Performance Metal‐Free Electrocatalysts for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Neutral Media

Abstract: Constructing inorganic-organic hybrids with superior properties in terms of water adsorption and activation will lead to catalysts with significantly enhanced electrocatalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in environmentally benign neutral media. Herein, we report SiO -polypyrrole (PPy) hybrid nanotubes supported on carbon fibers (CFs) (SiO /PPy NTs-CFs) as inexpensive and high-performance electrocatalysts for the HER in neutral media. Because of the strong electronic interactions between S… Show more

“…[27,28] 2) The Co 2p 1/2 and Co 2p 3/2 signals in the XPS spectra of CoP@PPy are positioned at lower binding energies than those of CoP (Δ = 0.6 and 0.5 eV), indicating increased electron density at the Co centers provided by PPy in the CoP@PPy sample. This means that the CC bond energy declines because the π-conjugation system in the pyrrole ring extended to the CoP core.…”

“…Carbon‐based supercapacitors have greatly attracted attention due to the large surface area, excellent conductivity, wide pore size distribution, and high cycle stability of carbon electrode materials . Main carbon electrode materials include 1D carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon fibers (CFs), 2D graphene, and 3D mes‐carbon .…”

“…Where e − –catalyst denotes metal‐bound electrons, H–catalyst and H 2 –catalyst represent a hydrogen atom and a hydrogen molecule adsorbed onto a surface metal atom, respectively. Si‐OH groups on the external surface of the SiO 2 nanosphere serve as negative electricity adsorption centers, which facilitate adsorption of H 3 O + more easily, which will benefit the HER . The Tafel slope calculated for Au@SiO 2 ‐Pt from the polarization curves (Figure a) equaled 52 mV dec −1 , which is significantly lower than the values of 123 mV dec −1 and 72 mV dec −1 obtained for Au@SiO 2 and Pt@SiO 2 (Figure b), respectively.…”
