Silica Microspheres with Fibrous Shells: Synthesis and Application in HPLC

Abstract: Monodispersed silica spheres with solid core and fibrous shell were successfully synthesized using a biphase reaction. Both the thickness and the pore size of the fibrous shell could be finely tuned by changing the stirring rate during synthesis. When stirring was adjusted from 0 to 800 rpm, the thickness of the shell could be tuned from 13 to 67 nm and the pore size from 5 to 16 nm. By continuously adjusting the stirring rate, fibrous shells with hierarchical pore structure ranged from 10 to 28 nm and thickne… Show more

“…32,34 These approaches based on different reaction instruments were able to prepare KCC-1 effectively, whereas evident non-uniformity issue of nanosphere sizes has not been resolved yet. Fortunately, non-uniform size with large differences does not inuence KCC-1 applications like catalysis, 32,33 cancer and tumour therapy, 35,36 gene and protein delivery, 37 water treatment, 38,39 chromatography, 40,41 dye-sensitized solar cell and supercapacitor, 42,43 etc. For this reason, only limited attentions have been paid and few investigations have been conducted to ameliorate KCC-1 size uniformity.…”

“…Owing to the fibrous nature of DFNS, it can be used as a stationary phase in chromatography. Not exactly DFNS, but solid silica spheres with DFNS‐like fibrous shells (Figure ) were used in high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) . The authors were able to tune the shell thickness from 13 to 67 nm.…”
