Silica Aerogels: A Multifunctional Building Material

Abstract: Silica aerogels are a nanoporous material with extremely high porosity (up to ~99.8 %), low density (as low as ~0.005 g/cm 3 ), and low thermal conductivity (~0.010-0.020 W/(mK)). Aerogels can also be made with a translucent or transparent state. These structural and functional features make aerogels a multifunctional material for many important applications. In this work, we discuss the perspective of aerogels as super insulation materials and window glazings in the building and construction sector. It shows … Show more

“…On the other hand, introducing 2D materials into electrochromism opens a new door to the green energy industry (e.g., smart windows) as their superior electrochromic properties enable both high performances in coloration efficiency, switching speed, cycling durability, etc., and multifunctionality in optical modulation over visible and near‐infrared transmittance. [ 227 ] However, these 2D material‐based electro‐optic devices, particularly electro‐optic modulators, would suffer from low yield, lengthy fabrication flow, or even a low modulation depth, [ 202 ] comparing to devices based on other effects like thermo‐optic effect. To realize industrial production, there are still many efforts expected to be put into.…”
