Silica aerogel–iron oxide nanocomposites: recoverable catalysts for the oxidation of alcohols with hydrogen peroxide

Abstract: Various aerogels of silica gel doped with Fe 2 O 3 were prepared by sol-gel method. They were calcined to produce nanoparticle solids. The nanosized mixed oxides were active in the oxidation of alcohols and produced carbonyl compounds in very good to excellent yields using hydrogen peroxide.

“…The surface area is less reduced in the case of the sample [IOx] 0.1 _B_40_R_1.25, which can possibly be ascribed to a more intense physical adsorption/interaction of N 2 with iron oxide phase when this is in the optimum amount. This behavior was also observed in the case of hydrophobic FeO x /SiO 2 nanocomposites, and metal-organic-frames (MOFs) having coordination polymers in the structure, or in flexible porous structures which contain pores may adjust and modify gas sorption properties by incorporation of ligand guest molecules[20,21,25]. However, this phenomenon is only observed at optimum dopant value of 0.1, while in the case of [IOx] 0.2 -B_40_R_1.25 the scenario is completely different, and S BET continues to decrease, which is attributed to the pore collapsing as a consequence of the great extent of shrinkage upon ambient pressure drying.…”
