Sijunzi decoction‑treated rat serum induces apoptosis of side population cells in gastric carcinoma

Abstract: Abstract. Sijunzi decoction (SJZD) is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine. Previous studies have indicated that SJZD exhibits antitumor activity. However, the underlying molecular mechanism has not been fully elucidated. To explore the antitumor mechanism of SJZD, the effects of serum from rats treated with SJZD on the proliferation of MKN-28 and HGC-27 gastric carcinoma cell lines were systematically investigated. It was found that SJZD-treated rat serum significantly inhibited the growth of MKN-28 and HGC-… Show more

“…Rats in each group were given gavage for 7 days. There were a large number of researches [11][12][13][14] using drug-containing serum to study the mechanism of their protective effects. Based on the human equivalent dose in the clinical practice and the animals' surface area, we could covert human dose to the rat dose [15].…”

“…SJZ decoction could improve the immune function and QOL. What's more, SZJ decoction could maintain peripheral blood leukocyte count and peritoneal macrophage activity after chemotherapy; in addition, it could regulate the immune function of the body and enhance the anticancer effect of immune cells [19][20][21][22]. SJZ decoction could inhibit gastric cancer cell growth in vivo, and the mechanism was associated with the downregulation of the expression of p53 mRNA [23].…”

“…The Sijunzi decoction (SJZD) is a classic Chinese formula for “reinforcing asthenia qi” and nourishing the spleen; it consists of Renshen (Codonopsis pilosula), Baizhu (Atractylodes macrocephala), Fulin (Poria cocos), and Gancao ( Glycyrrhiza uralensis) [ 13 ]. In clinical applications, researchers have recently observed that the SJZD has some therapeutic effects in the treatment of malignant digestive tumors [ 14 ].…”
