Angola is home to two of BP's largest subsea developments, Greater Plutonio and PSVM. High rate production wells have been achieved through the use of long open hole gravel pack completions, with alternate path screen design. Since the screens are deployed in conditioned oil based mud, the open hole is displaced to aqueous fluid prior to gravel packing the well. The early Greater Plutonio wells extensively utilised what is referred to as the 'conventional,' 'forward,' or Heel-to-Toe technique to displace the oil based fluid to water based. However, depletion of some of the reservoir sands increased the likelihood of screen plugging in wells with long open hole sections, as demonstrated by a handful of incidents. Also, the tight pore pressure to fracture gradient (PPFG) windows and small screen gauge sizes in the PSVM development made the 'forward' technique less suitable to adopt as a basis of design. As such, both projects developed a different displacement technique referred to as 'reverse' or Toe-to-Heel circulation to overcome the issues of sand control screen plugging and small PPFG windows. Work was performed to confirm that service tools could maintain full functionality, the fluid pill train properties were appropriate, and that hydraulic models could adequately predict the ECDs generated during the displacement. Eight open hole gravel pack wells, across both projects, have now been successfully completed using the Toe-to-Heel technique. Using the data from these wells, along with the existing data set from the earlier Greater Plutonio wells, it has been possible to determine a set of guidelines which indicate which technique is best suited under certain conditions. This paper briefly describes the history of the two projects, details the operational differences between both methods, describes the evolution of the modelling work done for ECD prediction, including several pros and cons associated with each method. The actual displacement data is also presented, and is compared with the predictions from the initial modelling simulations. The development of even more accurate modelling techniques is also discussed.

The Clair Ridge field development is located in the UK Continental Shelf, 142 miles north of mainland Scotland. This is the second phase of the Clair Field Development involving a subsea pre-drilling campaign and programmed long term well suspensions prior to new platform arrival. Two pre-drilled horizontal wells have been successfully completed with downhole sand screens in a geologically challenging environment, and suspended with cleaned-up hydrocarbons across the reservoir until the wells can be tied back to the platform in 2016. The reservoir drilling and completion design strategy was complicated due to the reservoir section being a naturally fractured sandstone alongside high permeability and weak matrix intervals susceptible to sand production. This presented several challenges to the team: the high risk of losses whilst drilling the reservoir with the probable use of large volumes of lost circulation materials (LCM), the risk of damage to the natural fractures or high permeability zones impacting subsequent well productivity, the need for down hole sand control completions, the ability to run these across a reservoir section containing large amounts of sized calcium carbonate LCM materials and also the mitigation of screen plugging from filter cake and LCM during well start-up. The downhole completion hardware was specifically designed to allow efficient placement of chemical breaker to dissolve LCM and filter cake to reduce the risk of sand screen plugging. The importance of minimising screen plugging and formation damage was also dictated by long term suspension of the pre-drilled wells required for start-up of a new offshore platform. This paper details the reservoir sand control completion design philosophy, the drilling and completion fluid system design and assurance testing in readiness for the technical challenges to be faced and the overall operational practices used in the field execution. The well flow-back and test results exceeded expectations, indicating good flowing length, greater than predicted Productivity Index (PI) and absence of skin damage, which creates significant benefit for the Clair Ridge project.

Limiting Water Production Using Linear Darcy's Flow Concept in an Open Hole Gravel Pack Completion in Deepwater West Africa

Well A from a deepwater development project in West Africa was designed to produce oil from a sandstone reservoir buried approximately 2200m below seabed. To maximize reservoir exposure, the trajectory was designed to have a sub horizontal drain (70°) over a 430m long open hole. Sand control was also required so that sand free production will be ensured. The Open hole gravel pack technique was selected to achieve these objectives.While drilling the reservoir section, a 43m long unexpected water bearing layer was found below the production casing shoe, 100m away from the main oil reservoir objective. With no specific equipment available to provide a perfect isolation of the unexpected water bearing sands encountered, alternative plans had to be considered for completion of the well on a short timeframe. Being an open hole completion, it was considered too risky to suspend the well in order to procure specialized equipment for water shut-off. The Drilling and Completion team made the decision to apply the physics of linear Darcy's flow to mitigate the potential water production.This paper aims at describing how the challenges brought by this water zone were successfully overcome leading to the delivery of a $90M well showing positive initial results i.e. good PI, good skin, no sand production and no noticeable water production.
