The global birth rate has recently shown a decreasing trend, and exposure to environmental pollutants has been identified as a potential factor affecting female reproductive health. Phthalates have been widely used as plasticizers in plastic containers, children's toys, and medical devices, and their ubiquitous presence and endocrine-disrupting potential have already raised particular concerns. Phthalate exposure has been linked to various adverse health outcomes, including reproductive diseases. Given that many phthalates are gradually being banned, a growing number of phthalate alternatives are becoming popular, such as di(isononyl) cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (DINCH), di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (DEHA), and di(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate (DEHTP), and they are beginning to have a wide range of environmental effects. Studies have shown that many phthalate alternatives may disrupt female reproductive function by altering the estrous cycle, causing ovarian follicular atresia, and prolonging the gestational cycle, which raises growing concerns about their potential health risks. Herein, we summarize the effects of phthalates and their common alternatives in different female models, the exposure levels that influence the reproductive system, and the effects on female reproductive impairment, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and offspring development. Additionally, we scrutinize the effects of phthalates and their alternatives on hormone signaling, oxidative stress, and intracellular signaling to explore the underlying mechanisms of action on female reproductive health, because these chemicals may affect reproductive tissues directly or indirectly through endocrine disruption. Given the declining global trends of female reproductive capacity and the potential ability of phthalates and their alternatives to negatively impact female reproductive health, a more comprehensive study is needed to understand their effects on the human body and their underlying mechanisms. These findings may have an important role in improving female reproductive health and in turn decreasing the number of complications during pregnancy.

Seropositivity Pattern of Human Cystic Echinococcosis at a Tertiary Care Hospital of India

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), even after several control measures, causes significant morbidity throughout the world. Besides imaging investigation technology, the serological tests are essential for both diagnosis and management of this slowly progressive disease. The present study was a hospital-based retrospective study that examined the seropositivity rate for Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato antibody in patients suspected of CE at our tertiary health care center over 8 years from 2013 to 2020. Records of new visits to hospital/clinics and associated hospital discharge constituted the denominator of calculation. All samples were tested using commercially available indirect immunoglobulin G enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. A total of 925 suspected patients with a clinical diagnosis of CE were screened. The age group that commonly tested positive for CE was 20 to 39 years, and liver was the predominant organ found to be affected. The seropositive rate was 41.2%. On further year-wise analysis, it was observed that the seropositivity rate had significantly declined from 61.4% in 2013 to 33.8% in 2020. This study clearly showed that there is a by 27.6% decline of CE seropositivity rate in 8 years. This declining rate may be attributed to improved socioeconomic status and better implementation of health programs.

Background: How has the research portfolio among IVF clinics been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic? From 2020 to present, the publication output at the intersection of IVF and Covid-19 has evolved and enlarged consistently each year. Methods: This descriptive, bibliometric scoping audit gathered metadata on all publications accessioned by the U.S. National Library of Medicine under MeSH terms ‘IVF’ and ‘Covid-19’, from 2020 to 2022. Results:In April 2020, the first published reports on IVF and Covid-19 entered the medical literature; 290 authors had produced 39 papers in this domain by year end. Research output on IVF and Covid-19 accelerated in 2021 and 2022 with a total of 158 articles attributed to >1200 authors. During the three-year reference interval, Open Access (free full-text) papers accounted for more than half of all published work. Despite pandemic lockdown restrictions, international collaboration on Covid-19 research at IVF units peaked in 2021 (39.6%). Conclusions: Although IVF units were temporarily closed during quarantine, the unprecedented challenges during the pandemic did not halt published research and patient safety remained uncompromised. Reliance on letters, editorials, and committee opinions seen in the early pandemic is unlikely to recur, now that more original primary clinical data are available.
