Significance of the juxtaoral organ (of Chievitz)

Abstract: Awareness of this normal anatomic structure is important, because the finding of epithelial islands intimately admixed with nerves could be misinterpreted as perineural invasion by carcinoma.

“…The inner layer called stratum fibrosum internum consists of dense collagen fibers that are separated from the epithelial islands by a distinct basal lamina[1011]The middle layer, stratum nervosum, is characterized by loose connective tissue stroma, populated with myelinated and nonmyelinated fibers[1012]The outer layer, the stratum fibrosum externum, connects to the muscle fascia of the buccotemporalis. The basement membrane around these epithelial islands demonstrates PAS positivity.…”

“…Some clinical aspects of the JOO have also been described (D'Andrea et al 1999). The juxta-oral organ may present as an intraoral mass and even the normal JOO may be misinterpreted to be a pathological tumor or its invasion (Leibl et al 1976;Pantanowitz & Balogh, 2003;Ide et al 2003a). In spite of over 100 years of studies, little is known about the function of the JOO.…”

“…In humans, the possibility of a receptor function of the JOO has been raised (D'Andrea et al, 1999;Pantanowitz and Balogh, 2003;M erida-Velasco et al, 2005). Recently, Ito et al (2009), studying mice, considered the JOO to be a sensory receptor.…”
