Significance of platelet antibodies in neonatal thrombocytopenic purpura affecting a pair of siblings

Abstract: SYNOPSIS A pair of siblings, both of whom had neonatal thrombocytopenic purpura, are described. During the first pregnancy, the mother was given chlorothiazide and the implications of this therapy are considered. At the end of the second pregnancy a platelet iso-antibody was detected in the maternal serum. The possible reason for not detecting this antibody in the serum of the second child is considered.

“…The antiglobulin consumption test was introduced by Moulinier (1955) and Steffen (1955). It has been used in the investigation of iso-immune neonatal purpura in human babies (Moulinier, 1958;Goldsmith et al, 1965) but has been found to be too time-consuming for use in routine typing. This technique has also been investigated and described by Dausset & Colombani (1964) and Dacie & Lewis (1966).…”
