Significance of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations to Plastic Surgery Residency Training

Abstract: Objective structured clinical examinations offer a unique tool to objectively assess the proficiency of residents in key areas of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education core competencies. In addition, they can be used to assess the specific milestones that plastic surgery residents must meet. This allows programs to identify and improve identified areas of weakness.

“…In-service scores are modestly predictive of performance on the American Board of Plastic Surgery written examination. 11,12 Plastic surgery clinical competency committees should consider how additional assessment methods might add value to their deliberations (e.g., quality improvement projects, error reporting, objective structured clinical exams, 13 postprocedure assessments, 5,14 morbidity and mortality reporting, 15 oral examinations, simulation, 16 resident milestone self-assessments). 17,18 Some of these are already ACGME requirements for residents to fulfill and thus are data points that are already available for committees to collect.…”

“…Given the benefits yielded among medical students, it seems natural that these tools would extend to residency training. Indeed, many specialties including surgical specialties have successfully tested and implemented OSCEs within their training programs 34. However, there has been limited research and testing of OSCEs within plastic surgery.…”

“…But, considering the educational objectives, it is essential to create a variety of stations, checklists, and scenarios. Hence, medical schools have progressively endeavored to enhance the quality of this examination by devising different scenarios and stations tailored to students' educational levels, with appropriate scoring rubrics and trained evaluators [ [19] , [20] , [21] , [22] ].…”
