“…These samples called ''anti-HBc only" may originate either from recovered infections having lost detectable anti-HBs or from late stage chronic infections having lost detectable HBsAg. Evidence of a secondary anti-HBs response after a single dose of HBV vaccine indicated that a large proportion of anti-HBc-only donors had indeed recovered from the infection indicated by activable memory B cells [24,25]. The issue was further complicated by detecting low levels of HBV DNA not only in anti-HBc only donations but also in some units carrying low-level anti-HBs.…”

“…As anti-HBc is the first detectable antibody, testing for total anti-HBc allows a serological screening during the immunological window when the individual is infected with HBV but the levels of HBsAg are still undetectable. Therefore, the significance of total anti-HBc reactivity, in the absence of the surface antigen, is up to a certain point still controversial [8][9][10]. Since HBV infection can remain dormant for a long period of time, the use of highly accurate methods for viral detection, such as PCR analysis, is important [11,12].…”

“…Detection of antibody against hepatitis B virus core antigen (anti-HBc) by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) is used solely or in combination with HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) screening for the diagnosis of hepatitis B. Anti-HBc detection is used as a screening method prior to hepatitis B vaccination in high prevalence groups [Lok et al, 1988]. The detection of anti-HBc by routine EIAs in a competitive test format is subject to frequent non-speciÂźc reactions causing false-positive results [Sherertz et al, 1983;Kessler et al, 1985;Schmidt et al, 1988;Caspary et al, 1989;Schifan et al, 1993]. Isolated false-positive anti-HBc reactivity (presence of anti-HBc; HBsAg and anti-HBs negative) has been attributed to cross-reactive antibodies or interfering substances in serum; this effect was also observed for anti-HBs [Sherertz et al, 1983;Kessler et al, 1985].…”
