Significance of Cytoplasmic Inclusions in Lupus Nephritis

Abstract: The report describes 22 cases of lupus nephritis (20 diffuse and 2 mesangial) showing frequent tubuloreticular inclusions (TRI) in the glomerular and peritubular capillary endothelial cells as well as cylindric confronting cisternae (CCC) mainly in interstitial infiltrating cells. Ten other cases of lupus nephritis that were actively treated or were in the sclerosing stage and did not show CCC were also studied. The presence of cytoplasmic inclusions correlated with various clinical and histologic parameters. … Show more

“…These findings were more suggestive of glomerular lesions in TA than of class II lupus nephritis. Furthermore, tubuloreticular bodies, which are a hallmark of lupus nephritis, were not found within the cytoplasm of endothelial cells on EM [6]. In particular, a similar bubble-like appearance in glomerular lesions has been reported in TA [1].…”

“…TRIs were found in a high proportion of cases of active, untreated LN [25]. The presence or absence of TRIs has been proposed previously as a method to distinguish between idiopathic membranous glomerulonephritis and lupus class V nephropathy [26].…”

“…TRS are composed of a membranous network with interwoven tubules of approximately 22 In this study TRS were found in eight of 17 synovial fluids. They were predominantly in mononuclear cells with dense bodies and rough endoplasmic reticulum.…”
