Soil salinity, a serious threat to jute cultivation in saline areas (southern parts) of Bangladesh. Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) has developed a moderately salt tolerant White Jute variety (BJRI Deshi pat-8; BJC 2197) in 2013 which can’t grow well in saline areas having more than 8.0 dSm-1 salinity stress. Hence, 23 whitejute accessions and one control variety (BJC 2197) were tested to isolate the salt tolerant accession(s) for hybridization purpose followed by augmented design in farmers’ field having nearly 8.0-9.0 dSm-1 salinity at Patuakhali district during mid-March to mid-August 2019. The experimental plot size was 3.0 m2 (3 m × 1 m) for each genotype having 3 lines of 1.0 m length, plant-plant: 10-15 cm and line- line: 30 cm distance. Soil salinity was recorded during sowing, vegetative and plant maturity stages. In this study, the highest plant height 2.84 m was recorded in Acc. 2750 followed by Acc. 2589 (2.76 m) and Acc. 1779 (2.69 m). The highest fiber yield (9.0 g plant-1) was observed in Acc. 1779 followed by Acc. 2589 (8.40 g plant-1) and Acc. 2750 (8.0 g plant-1). The lowest plant mortality rate (2.5%) was found in Acc.2750 followed by Acc.1779 (6.24%), Acc. 1780 (7.50), Acc. 3556 (11.10%), Acc. 2589 (11.20%) and BJC 2197 (16.5%). Few seeds were germinated in Acc. 3020 and Acc. 3658 but plants were died after 20 days of sowing. Six genotypes of cluster I showed higher diversity in Euclidean cluster analysis. The Acc. 2750, Acc. 1779, Acc. 2589 of cluster I having relative salinity tolerance and good fiber yield capacity would be grown in next year for confirmation as well as hybridization with the existing salinity susceptible variety to develop high yielding white jute variety for saline areas.

Ginkgo biloba is an exotic plant for Ukraine that is nowadays becoming popular for parks and landscape gardening. Raw materials (leaves) of these plants are used as medicinal, and in the context of organic production has pharmaceutical significance. At Sumy National Agrarian University fields Ginkgo biloba is grown by seedling method, young seedlings are transplanted into the open ground, in an area where the plants are grown without chemical synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Row spacing between Ginkgo plants is 3 m and in case of high temperature and dry growing season the survival rate is reduced. The use of cover crops in the rows of Ginkgo biloba can help the plant cope with temperature stress, regulate the structural and nutrient status of the soil. We conducted one experiment with some common cover crops for Forest-steppe of Ukraine such as a phacelia, white clover, red clover, ryegrass, sainfoin, white mustard during growing seasons 2019‒2020. Sites planted in the spring between the rows of Ginkgo. At the end of August, soil samples to a depth of 0‒10, 10‒20, 20‒30 cm were collected to determine the structural and aggregate composition. These samples after reaching the air-dry state were sieved (dry method) and determined the percentage of soil particles with different diameters and structural coefficient soil. The percentage of agronomically valuable structure depended on the mechanical tillage on the site without and with cover crops, weather conditions. In the site without cover crops with mechanical tillage for weed control, the highest percentage of aggregates with a diameter of 10‒0.25 mm and coefficient of structure in layers of 0‒10 and 20‒30 cm was obtained. White mustard and white clover cover crops have shown the best result in good soil aggregation in the 0‒10 cm layer. In the layer of 10‒20 cm, the coefficient of structure was the highest in sites with white clover, respectively agronomically valuable structure was 69.6 %, slightly less with mustard 68.3 % and sainfoin 68.8 %. In a layer of 20‒30 cm sainfoin and clover among other cover crops showed the best result, the coefficient of structure was 2.7. Lastly, further research is needed to choose the best cover crop for Ginkgo biloba young plantations which help the plants to pass strongly through to environmental stressful condition. Additional researches are needed for cover crops selection and their mixtures, terms of sowings, times of cutting should be studied.

Aims: Rice is the most widely consumed staple food as well as Bangladesh. With the global upsurge in population, rapid urbanization, and industrialization increasing waste production in urban areas and managing them becoming a major concern. Municipal solid waste (MSW) is considered an important recycling tool for use in agricultural fields as compost. Green manure (GM) is another thing thatprovides a substantial portion of the nitrogen requirement of rice. Both MSW compost and GM add organic matter to the soil. We conducted a study to know the residual effects of municipal solid waste (MSW) compost and green manure (GM) on nutrient contents in soil and uptakes in rice (BINA Dhan-7). Methods: The experiment was conducted with a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), nine treatments, and three replications. The present rice crop received no fertilizers during the cultivation period. MSW compost and GM inoculated with Rhizobium strains were incorporated as per treatments in 2 cycles of the Mungbean- Dhaincha- Rice cropping pattern. Results: The highest nutrient content and uptake were recorded with higher rates of MSW compost and GM application in the preceding crops. Compost is a slow-release source of nitrogen and most nitrogen remaining after completion of the composting process is bound into organic forms. After application nutrients do not become available immediately for plant uptake, and remain as residue which contributes to improving soil quality for several years after application ceases. MSW compost and GM increases soil nutrient contents, availability, and uptake by adding organic matter, increasing the C: N ratio, and soil’s physical, chemical, and biological properties. Conclusion: The MSW compost and GM can provide a significant amount of residual effects on the nutrient content in the soil and uptake in rice which depends on the nutrient composition of applied manure in previous crops.
