Signet ring cell carcinoma of rectum metastasizing to synchronous renal cell carcinoma: a case report

Abstract: Background Rectal signet ring cell carcinoma is a rare type of colorectal adenocarcinoma characterized by an aggressive biological behavior and poor prognosis. The co-occurrence of colorectal carcinoma and renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has found in many hundreds of patients, many of whom also have additional malignancies. Cancer to cancer metastasis is rare and an uncommon phenomenon in malignancy, especially at the time of initial diagnosis, suggesting a genetic susceptibility. … Show more

“…It represents a sign of poor prognosis and reflects the dissemination of the disease. 4 Herein, we present a case of a colorectal signet cell carcinoma with the fortuitous discovery of a metastatic localization within a resected lipoma of the anterior abdominal wall. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the inaugural instance documented in the literature involving this specific pairing of a donor and a host tumor, and marks the initial occurrence of metastasis in a typical lipoma.…”

“…However, TTM is not as rare as previously thought. Since Berent’s original case report in 1902, almost 200 cases have been reported in the literature [ 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ]. The most frequently reported recipient tumor is RCC, and lung carcinomas are the most common metastatic tumor donors.…”

“…A majority of CRCs are adenocarcinomas which can be further differentiated in mucinous, signet ring cell, and other less common subtypes [ 1 ]. Signet ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) is defined by the presence of greater than 50% extracellular mucin by volume with the stomach being the most common site [ 2 , 3 ]. Signet ring cell morphology is a rare pathological finding for CRC, making up less than 1% of CRCs and about 1.39% of rectal cancers [ 4 , 5 ].…”
