Signatures of synchrotron emission and of electron acceleration in the X-ray spectra of Mrk 421

Abstract: Context. BL Lac objects undergo strong flux variations involving considerable changes in their spectral shapes. We specifically investigate the X-ray spectral evolution of Mrk 421 over a time span of about nine years. Aims. We aim at statistically describing and physically understanding the large spectral changes in X rays observed in Mrk 421 over this time span. Methods. We perform a homogeneous spectral analysis of a wide data set including archived observations with ASCA, BeppoSAX, RXTE, as well as publishe… Show more

“…In particular, Kardashev (1962) showed that a log-parabolic spectrum results from a Fokker-Planck equation with a momentum-diffusion term and a monoenergetic or quasi-monoenergetic particle injection. The results presented in Tramacere et al (2007b) rely on the theoretical prediction from the Kardashev (1962) that the curvature term (r) is inversely proportional to the diffusion term (D):…”

“…Its flux variations go along with significant spectral variations (Fossati et al 2000a;Massaro et al 2004) and the spectral shape in general exhibits a curvature that is described well by a logparabolic model (Massaro et al 2004;Tramacere et al 2007b).…”

“…Mrk 421 and other HBL-type blazars have been extensively studied in the soft X-ray band (e.g., Makino et al 1987;Takahashi et al 1996;Ravasio et al 2004;Tramacere et al 2007bTramacere et al , 2009, revealing a range of spectral slopes in various quiescent and flaring states. Less is known about the hard X-ray (10 keV) properties of blazar jet emission: the data are far fewer and available mostly for flaring episodes, or averaged over relatively long timescales (e.g., Guainazzi et al 1999;Giebels et al 2007;Fossati et al 2008;Ushio et al 2009;Abdo et al 2011).…”
