Signalment, Survival, and Prognostic Factors in Doberman Pinschers With End‐Stage Cardiomyopathy

Abstract: Congestive heart failure (CHF) was evaluated by retrospective review of case records of 66 Doberman Pinschers presenting with overt signs of 2 weeks' duration or less. Left-sided CHF was predominant, the majority of dogs were male, most were 5 to 10 years of age, and CHF tended to occur in females at an older age. Sudden death occurred in 13 dogs (20%). The mean and median survival times of all dogs were 9.65 and 6.5 weeks, respectively. Both atrial fibrillation and bilateral CHF at the time of presentation we… Show more

“…4,5 Only dogs with severe ventricular tachyarrhythmia nonresponsive to antiarrhythmic drugs that then were treated with amiodarone were included in this study. These dogs were studied because of an observation of toxicity that was characterized by lethargy, anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, and hepatotoxicity associated with amiodarone administration.…”

“…Survival rate at 1 year varied between 3 and 54% in different studies. 9,10,16,29,50,57,80,86,87,95 The wide variation in survival times may partly depend on different functional classes of CHF in different studies. Medical treatment, especially the use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and ß-blocking agents, varied considerably between different studies, which also may be a source of variation in survival times.…”

“…Evidence suggests that benazepril might be beneficial in dogs with asymptomatic heart disease,22 but 2 trials23, 24 were not able to demonstrate a significant effect of enalapril on time to develop CHF. DCM is characterized by a slowly progressive presymptomatic phase during which ventricular premature contractions occur along with progressive left ventricular dysfunction and, usually, progressively more severe ventricular tachyarrhythmias 25, 26, 27. Outcome of dogs with DCM is usually either sudden death or CHF 25.…”
