“…A similar external delay factor was reported in the work of Owens (2007) as delays in obtaining patents by UK’s small to medium-scale manufacturing firms. This factor also corroborates the finding of Ku et al (2011) who indicate time-consuming regulatory processes as causes of delays in new products introduction.…”

“…The 20 detailed factors or delay causes were further grouped into five categories of delays based on their relatedness in causing delays in new products introduction. Again, extant literature (Kulwant et al , 1994; Owens, 2007; Ku et al , 2011; Ferrarese and de Calvalho, 2014; Javadi et al , 2016) in the areas of new products introduction and time to the market frequently point to factors related to process, communication, product design, labour and external issues as causing delays in new products introduction. Hence, the five delay categories are as follows: Process-related factor: lack of understanding of project management processes; lack of priority placed on projects; lack of formal project structure; high number of projects running concurrently; late involvement of key stakeholders in projects; late escalation of bottlenecks; time constraints not factored in project planning; lack of adequate production capacity assessment. Communication-related factors: lack of communication within functions; lack of communication across functions; lack of communication with external stakeholders. Product design-related factors: insufficient information on product details; insufficient market research on product profitability; limited expertise of product development team; ad hoc changes in project direction. Labour-related factors: unqualified/inexperienced labour; high workload of project team. Externa-related factors: delays caused by external laboratory; delays caused by requirements of regulatory bodies; changes in direction of benchmarked competitor.…”
