Signal Timing Optimization for Oversaturated Networks Using TRANSYT-7F

Abstract: Oversaturated traffic networks with spill-back conditions are becoming more common, and their signal timing is difficult to optimize. Up through release 7, TRANSYT-7F, a signal timing tool for traffic network simulation and optimization, was designed for modeling only undersaturated networks. Release 8, which was recently completed, has the added capability to model oversaturated networks. Because signal timing optimization for oversaturated networks requires emphasis on traffic throughput and queue management… Show more

“…2 to 5 min horizon). There are several adaptive control systems being developed; some of which include: SCATS [26], OPAC [27], TRANSYT-7F [28], UTOPIA [29], SCOOT [30], RHODES [31], ACS-Lite [32], MOTION [33], and more programs are also coming on to the market. Many of them are adaptive signal systems with a centralized controller.…”

“…To tackle the complex oversaturated traffic issues, researchers for TRANSYT-7F [34] introduced a penalty function to the queue in its performance index if blockages between lanes occur. This enhanced version also enables users to have the option of using multiple cycles or a stepwise simulation program to account for spillback affects.…”
