Signal: SAR for ice, glacier and global dynamics

Abstract: SIGNAL is an innovative earth exploration mission proposal with the main objective to estimate accurately and repeatedly topography and topographic changes associated with mass change or other dynamic effects on glaciers, ice caps and polar ice sheets. Elevation measurements are complemented with glacier velocity measurements, providing valuable additional information for a better understanding of the hydrology of glacierized basins and of the Arctic and Antarctic water cycle. SIGNAL is capable of monitoring a… Show more

“…Besides the TanDEM-X mission, satellite configurations operated at other frequency bands are taken into account: (a) Tandem-L ; (b) a C-band tandem with wavelength and orbit altitude of Sentinel-1 (Torres et al, 2012) considering the possibility of adding a passive companion satellite for interferometric measurements; (c) a K uband tandem based on a concept presented by Lopez-Dekker et al (2014) for a single platform meant for measuring ocean currents; and (d) a scenario for K a band that is adopted from a proposal for an ESA Earth Explorer mission (Börner et al, 2010).…”

“…To address this scientific needs, recently an international team of scientist lead by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) has proposed a Ka-band single-pass interferometric mission concept named SIGNAL (SAR for Ice, Glacier and oceaN globAL Dynamics) [2]. A formation flying constellation of two compact satellites was proposed as the only way to obtain the desired cross-track baseline.…”
