Signal compression and enhancement using a new orthogonal‐polynomial‐based discrete transform

Abstract: Discrete orthogonal functions are important tools in digital signal processing. These functions received considerable attention in the last few decades. This study proposes a new set of orthogonal functions called discrete Krawtchouk-Tchebichef transform (DKTT). Two traditional orthogonal polynomials, namely, Krawtchouk and Tchebichef, are combined to form DKTT. The theoretical and mathematical frameworks of the proposed transform are provided. DKTT was tested using speech and image signals from a well-known d… Show more

“…In order to identify the statistical significance of the obtained scores, a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) statistical test is performed [30]. The p-values were computed using the one-way ANOVA test to determine whether the speech enhanced by the proposed method SISQuI has significant quality and intelligibility improvement with the speech enhanced by OSMB-SS and SpS approach.…”

“…It implies that the proposed SISQuI approach effectively restores the speech components. Both CSIIH and CSIIM are observed to improve, in most of the noise conditions considered. Further, for low‐level segments (CSIIL), the intelligibility improvement achieved by the proposed SISQuI is found to be equivalent to SpS approach, and better than the OSMB‐SS approach. “…It allows the viewing of signals in different domains and provides a massive shift in terms of its powerful capability to analyze the components of various signals. Discrete transforms are characterized by their energy compaction capability and other properties [ 113 ]. Discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and discrete cosine transform (DCT) are examples of discrete transforms.…”

“…On the basis of the idea that the orthogonal polynomial can be generated by multiplying two orthogonal polynomials, different hybrid forms of KP and TP have been proposed. Jassim et al [8] proposed the Tchebichef-Krawtchouk polynomial (TKP), Mahmmod et al [12] presented the Krawtchouk-Tchebichef polynomial (KTP), and Abdulhussain et al [13] recently proposed the squared Krawtchouk-Tchebichef polynomial (SKTP).…”

“…The TKP and their discrete transform coefficients (moments) have a remarkable localization property, but a special type of window for signal framing is required for signal processing [12]. The KTP and their moments perform well in signal compression [12]. However, KTP requires improvement in its EC property.…”
