Sigmoid Volvulus in Pregnancy Assessed by Contrast-Enhanced Computed Tomography Scanning

Abstract: Sigmoid volvulus requires urgent treatment, and it is particularly rare among pregnant women without a history of laparotomy. A delay in diagnosis may lead to serious consequences for the mother and fetus, and a rapid diagnosis and treatment in this setting is essential. The patient was a 19-year-old primiparous woman. “…8 Additionally, the possible risk of teratogenesis with CT scan radiation dose is marginal during the third trimester. 5,9 Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and other modalities can also be used, however their availability in emergent situations is not reliable, and the associated increased cost could be an issue as well, for some patients.…”

“…In this way, we would like to share our ideas on SV associated with pregnancy or delivery. First, pregnancy complicating SV is a fairly seldom clinical entity worldwide with little more than 110 cases reported to date 3 . Similarly, labour together with SV is extremely rare, the number of which can be counted on the fingers of one hand 4 .…”
