“…There are two distinct populations of NPRW, on the eastern and western sides of the Pacific (Gregr and Coyle, 2009), which are genetically distinct (Pastene et al, 2018). Early estimates based on sightings data suggested the species as a whole totaled 100-200 whales (Wada, 1973;Sekiguchi et al, 2014;Ovsyanikova et al, 2015). For the western stock, surveys by Miyashita and Kato (1998) in summers of 1989, 1990 in the Okhotsk Sea estimated abundance at 922 (95% CI 404-2108).…”

“…), 10 sightings of right whales in five groups were reported in 2012 surveys southeast of the Kamchatka Peninsula and off the Kuril Islands (Sekiguchi et al . ) and there were 19 sightings of 31 whales in the Russian EEZ (mainly around the northern Kuril Islands, the southern Kamchatka Peninsula and the Commander Islands) between 2003 and 2014 (Ovsyanikova et al . ).…”

“…However, the Red List documentation concluded that given the very wide confidence intervals and the lack of clear evidence of any recent increase in numbers, the lower end of the range of that abundance estimate (i.e., about 400) should be used for assessment (Reilly et al 2008k). Surveys for large whales in offshore waters east of Hokkaido (Japan) and the Kuril Islands from 1994 to 2013 resulted in 55 sightings of right whales (77 individuals) including ten female/calf pairs (Matsuoka et al 2014), 10 sightings of right whales in five groups were reported in 2012 surveys southeast of the Kamchatka Peninsula and off the Kuril Islands (Sekiguchi et al 2014) and there were 19 sightings of 31 whales in the Russian EEZ (mainly around the northern Kuril Islands, the southern Kamchatka Peninsula and the Commander Islands) between 2003 and 2014 (Ovsyanikova et al 2015). Whales from this subpopulation are occasionally killed incidentally in coastal fishing operations around Japan and Russia (Burdin et al 2004).…”
