Bambu merupakan salah satu hasil hutan multiguna yaitu sebagai bahan baku mebel, kerajinan, alat musik, dan konstruksi. Besarnya kekuatan tekan dan tarik bambu sudah dimanfaatkan dalam desain konstruksi, namun masih terbatas, seperti untuk kolom atau penguat beton. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menentukan sifat mekanis bambu betung (Dendrocalamus asper Backer ex K.Heyne,) umur empat tahun, yaitu kekuatan tekan sejajar serat, tarik sejajar serat, dan tarik tegak lurus serat, serta nilai 5% batas bawah. Ukuran contoh uji dan pengujian sifat mekanis bambu betung mengacu pada ISO 22157-2019. Pengujian tekan sejajar serat dan tarik tegak lurus serat menggunakan UTM SATEC/Baldwin, sedangkan pengujian tarik sejajar serat menggunakan UTM Chun Yen. Analisis data menggunakan aplikasi Easyfit 5,5 untuk mendapatkan nilai 5% batas bawah tiap pengujian. Rata-rata kuat tekan sejajar serat yang diperoleh yaitu sebesar 52,97 N/mm², sedangkan nilai rata-rata kuat tarik sejajar serat sebesar 109,03 N/mm². Rata-rata kuat tarik tegak lurus serat dengan ukuran lubang uji 25 dan 40 mm sebesar 2,53 dan 1,19 N/mm², sedangkan nilai rata-rata MOE tekan dan MOE tarik sejajar serat sebesar 2.674 dan 9.542 N/mm². Nilai 5% batas bawah untuk kuat tekan sejajar serat sebesar 38,10 N/mm², tarik sejajar serat sebesar 61,78 N/mm², sedangkan untuk kuat tarik tegak lurus serat sebesar 0,60 N/mm². Nilai MOE tekan dan MOE tarik sejajar serat yang diperoleh sebesar 1.105 dan 6.076 N/mm².

Randu (Ceiba pentandra (L) Gaertn.) wood is one of the fast-growing species which has low density. Wood modification by microwave (MW) treatment were conducted to improve its quality. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of microwave treatment on the characteristics (physical properties, wood discoloration, and wettability) of Randu wood. Microwave treatment for 0.5 and 1 minute were applied for Randu wood. The evaluation of wood discoloration, wettability, and physical properties include moisture content, specific gravity, swelling, and anti-swelling efficiency (ASE) were measured. Wood discoloration and wettability of untreated and treated sample were measured. The results showed that microwave treatment was reduce the swelling, wettability and cause discoloration. Microwave treatment not significantly affected moisture content and specific gravity of treated wood. Microwave treatment increased contact angle than untreated, and 0.5 minutes microwave treatment caused significant discoloration than 1 minutes microwave treatment and untreated sample. The MW treatment indicated to increase the hydrophobicity of Randu wood. Keywords: discoloration, microwave, randu, wettability. ABSTRAK Kayu randu (Ceiba pentandra (L) Gaertn.) merupakan salah satu jenis kayu cepat tumbuh yang memiliki kerapatan rendah. Modifikasi kayu dengan perlakuan microwave (MW) dilakukan untuk meningkatkan kualitasnya. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengevaluasi pengaruh perlakuan microwave terhadap karakteristik (sifat fisik, perubahan warna kayu, dan keterbasahan) kayu Randu. Perlakuan microwave selama 0.5 dan 1 menit diaplikasikan pada kayu randu. Pengujian yang dilakukan yaitu perubahan warna kayu, keterbasahan, dan sifat fisis yang meliputi kadar air, berat jenis, pengembangan, dan anti-swelling efficiency (ASE). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan microwave mengurangi pengembangan, keterbasahan dan menyebabkan perubahan warna. Perlakuan microwave tidak berpengaruh nyata terhadap kadar air dan berat jenis kayu. Perlakuan gelombang mikro meningkatkan sudut kontak dibanding kontrol, dan perlakuan microwave 0.5 menit menyebabkan perubahan warna yang signifikan dibanding microwave 1 menit dan tanpa perlakuan. Perlakuan MW dapat meningkatkan hidrofobisitas kayu randu. Katakunci: keterbasahan, microwave, randu, perubahan warna.

Bamboo-based composite has been used widely for building components and furniture. Oriented flattened bamboo board (OFBB) is a composite board consisting of oriented structure sheets of flattening bamboo. This study aimed to analyze the physical and mechanical properties of the OFBB from ater (Gigantochloa atter) and betung (Dendrocalamus asper) bamboo. A three-layer flattened bamboo board using the isocyanate resin with a density target of 0.6 g/cm3 was applied. The characteristics of raw bamboo, the contact angle of OFBB, and board properties of density, moisture content, thickness swelling, and water absorption, as well as bending, internal bonding (IB), and compressive strength properties were determined to evaluate the quality of the OFBB. Based on the findings, the thin wall thickness of ater bamboo enhanced the physical and mechanical properties of the OFBB compared to the higher wall thickness of betung bamboo. Therefore, further development in bamboo composite products with those anatomical properties seems promising. The dimensional stability and bending properties of OFBB from ater bamboo met the quality of first grade of the Canadian Standard for OSB and waferboard, except for the IB strength.
