Side Effects of Interferon-α Therapy

Abstract: Further research on the mechanisms underlying both therapeutic effects and adverse events is warranted. Hopefully, this will lead to better identification of those patients who are likely to benefit from treatment without experiencing severe toxicities.

“…Adverse effects of interferon a treatment are not trivial, and include, besides flu-like symptoms, nausea, fatigue, and psychiatric sequelae. 57 Previous studies have indeed reported discontinuation of treatment in almost one-fourth of cases. 58 Patients must therefore be supported and motivated, underlying that this represents so far the only treatment capable of targeting the mutant cells in their bone marrow.…”

“…However, even when it is known that exercise can improve insulin resistance at the cellular level [39] , it can be speculated that a decrease in fatty liver would cause less liver injury, although further studies are required in order to determine any proposed mechanism. Also, the small number of analyzed patients with changes in viral load may only indicate the importance of performing further studies with this approach, primarily in those patients that have not responded to antiviral treatment [14] either because of the virus genotype [40] or as a secondary effect of the interferon by itself [41] . At the beginning of the program, only 12% of the patients reported a positive mood state, however, negative mood state shifted towards a positive mood score in 88% of the patients at the end.…”
