Particulate TiB 2 reinforced aluminum-based metal matrix composites (MMCs) were successfully fabricated by means of the reaction processing method. TiB 2 particulates were formed in situ through the reaction of Ti and B in systems. The results showed that in situ TiB 2 particulates formed in the Ti-Al-B system had a size of 5 m and they exhibited block and rodlike structures. Moreover, coarse Al 3 Ti blocks several tens of micrometers in size were also formed simultaneously. On the other hand, equiaxed Al 2 O 3 and TiB 2 particulates with a size of less than 2 m were formed in situ in the TiO 2 -Al-B and TiO 2 -Al-B 2 O 3 systems. The Al 3 Ti phase was completely eliminated in the TiO 2 -Al-B system with increasing B content. Tensile tests revealed that the Al 2 O 3 ⅐ TiB 2 /Al composite fabricated from the TiO 2 -Al-B system exhibits excellent mechanical properties. The yield strength of the Al 2 O 3 ⅐ TiB 2 /Al composite appeared to increase with increasing TiB 2 content. The yield strength of the Al 2 O 3 ⅐ TiB 2 /Al composite could be further increased by introducing CuO into the TiO 2 -Al-B system. Such an increment in mechanical strength arose from the strengthening effect caused by the Al 2 Cu precipitates. The incorporation of CuO had no effect on the in situ reaction process of the TiO 2 -Al-B system. Finally, the effect of SiC addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites fabricated from the TiO 2 -Al-B and TiO 2 -Al-B-CuO systems was also investigated.

Aluminum, , and Mg matrix composites with uniform distributions of SiC p reinforcement have been prepared by the vacuum infiltration technique. The infiltration kinetics have been found to increase in the order of Al, Al-Li, and Mg. The Al-Li alloy and Mg as matrix materials have shown improved wettability with SiC p in comparison to Al, leading to enhanced infiltration kinetics and reduced reinforcement degradation in the former cases. The infiltration kinetics are insensitive to preheat temperature beyond a critical temperature, which is close to the melting point of the matrix. A marginal improvement in infiltration kinetics could be obtained with Cu and Ni coating on SiC and on its dynamic oxidation. The improvement is significant at a higher preheat temperature of SiC. The Vickers hardness, measured on the SiC particles, has been shown to be an index of the strength of the interface between the matrix and reinforcement in the composite.

Al 6013-20 SiC (p) in tempers T4, O, and F is sensitive to localized corrosion in 3.5 wt.% NaCl because of the preponderance of the secondary phase particles of Cu, Fe, and Cr at the Al/SiC interface. Treatment with cerium chloride effectively inhibited the localized corrosion of the alloy by suppressing the cathodic reactions at Al 6013/SiC interface as shown by electrochemical investigations. Morphological studies showed the formation of a protective cerium oxide/hydroxide films, which suppresses the corrosion of the alloy.
