Siblings of Children with Special Needs

Abstract

Siblings of children with special needs have received little attention in the occupational therapy literature. However, siblings play an important role in the development of children with special needs. Siblings are also at risk for problems of emotional adjustment that have an impact on their own well-being as well as the well-being of the family. The research on siblings of special needs children is reviewed and followed by a description of the Ottawa Children's Treatment Centre sibling programme. RÉSUMÉ Les études en ergothérapie ont fait peu de cas jusqu'à maintenant de la fratrie des enfants nécessitant des soins spéciaux. Les frères et les soeurs jouent par contre un rôle important dans le développement des enfants ayant des besoins particuliers. Ils présentent aussi des risques de problèmes d'adaptation émotive avec répercussions sur leur bien-être et sur le bien-être de la famille. La recherche sur la fratrie des enfants nécessitant des soins spéciaux est passée en revue et est suivie d'une description du programme pour la fratrie du Centre de traitement pour enfants d'Ottawa.
