Background: the emergence of new drugs for cancer treatment has reflected on increasing patient survival. However, these drugs bring side effects, such as dry mouth sensation and hyposalivation. This study aimed to evaluating the relationship between patients with cancer and xerostomia and hyposalivation. Method : cross-sectional study with 114 patients diagnosed with cancer treated with anastrozole and / or bicalutamide. Age, type of neoplasia, gender, xerostomia, and type of medicine were obtained through questionnaire. Resting and stimulated salivary flow were collected by the researcher. After collection, using a 10 mL disposable syringe, salivary flow was quantified in millimeters and divided into 6 (collection period). A Descriptive statistical analysis, Chi-square test and T-test were carried out through Statistical Package for Social Science® (SSPS) version 21, considering p<0.05. Results : results showed that 67 (55.8%) patients who use hormone therapy presented hyposalivation and 73 (64. 0%) patients presented xerostomia. Conclusion : According to the results from this study, there is statistically significant association between stimulated hyposalivation and hormone therapy usage (p = 0.015). Statistically significant association was also observed among hyposalivation and xerostomia and hormone therapy usage (p=0.049 and p = 0.001).

ResumoObjetivo: o objetivo deste artigo foi revisar a literatura sobre a prática da acupuntura no tratamento da xerostomia e do hipofluxo salivar. Material e Métodos: foi realizada busca no PUBMED, SCIELO e GOOGLE ACADÊMICO. Os critérios de inclusão foram artigos em português e inglês. Resultados: a literatura revela uma grande falta de padronização entre trabalhos, fato que dificulta a comparação entre eles. Conclusão: mesmo com consideráveis estudos demostrando eficácia a curto e longo prazo, questões importantes ainda permanecem incertas, exigindo novas pesquisas para uma completa definição sobre o assunto.Palavras-chave: Xerostomia; Hipofluxo salivar; Acupuntura; Terapia alternativa. IntroduçãoH ipofluxo salivar, ou hipossalivação, caracteriza-se como a redução objetiva do fluxo salivar, 1 já xerostomia é definida como a sensação subjetiva de boca seca.1-4 Com etiologia multifatorial, ambas as condições podem ser resultado de doenças sistêmicas que afetam as glândulas salivares, de tratamento antineoplásico, ou também podem representar efeito secundário de alguns medicamentos com ação simpaticomimética ou anticolinérgica. 2O manejo e o controle da xerostomia e do hipofluxo salivar consistem, primariamente, em tratamentos paliativos, incluindo aplicação de substitutos e estimulantes salivares, laserterapia de baixa potência e prescrição de medicamentos como a pilocarpina. A maioria destes, porém, apresenta resultados apenas momentâneos, na melhor das hipóteses. 2,4,5Originária da China há mais de três mil anos, a acupuntura é realizada com a inserção de agulhas em pontos específicos na pele, chamados acupontos, que estão em íntima relação com nervos, vasos sanguíneos, tendões, periósteos e cápsulas articulares. Assim, são possíveis estimulações diretas ao sistema nervoso central. 3,5 Os primeiros estudos na área odontológica com acupuntura datam de 1974 e, desde então, esta vem ganhando popularidade nos consultórios. 3,5,6 Como tratamento para xerostomia e hipofluxo salivar, a técnica foi primeiramente relatada pela literatura ocidental em 1981 e parece oferecer resultados satisfatórios a curto e longo prazo. 5Desta forma, o presente artigo tem o objetivo de levantar, por meio de revisão de literatura, evidências sobre a eficácia da acupuntura como tratamento alternativo para pacientes com hipofluxo salivar e xerostomia, oferecendo informações referentes à prática para os profissionais da área odontológica. Abstract:The human body releases around 500-600mL of saliva daily, however when values of unstimulated whole saliva range from 0.1 to 0.2mL/ min, there is a condition called Hyposalivation or hyposialia. Hyposalia is characterized by a large number of systemic conditions, including Sjögren's syndrome, a chronic autoimmune disease that affects between 0.1 and 3% of the world population and is characterized by exocrinopathy of the salivary glands leading to glandular hypofunction and thus decreasing the normal salivary flow. Saliva is part of innate immunity, when there is a decrease in protein secretion, numerous oral manifestations occur such as dental caries, candidiasis, gingival disease, angular cheilitis, lymphomas of the salivary glands, dysphagia, erythematous and fissured tongue, among others. Currently there is no defined dental treatment, however there are alternative treatments by sialogogues and salivary substitutes, plus non-pharmacological therapies, which seek to maintain the ecology and oral conditions stable, in addition to preventive and restorative dental treatment for lesions already established as a consequence of the disease. The aim of this study is to conduct a literature review on the characteristics, classification, oral manifestations and dental management of Sjögren's syndrome.
