Shuganjieyu capsule for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults: a systematic review

Abstract: Shuganjieyu capsule is superior to placebo in terms of overall treatment effectiveness and safety. Both response rate and remission rate among patients treated with the combination of Shuganjieyu plus venlafaxine were significantly higher than those treated with venlafaxine alone. Due to the considerable risk of bias in majority of trials, recommendations for practice should be cautious, and additional, well-designed RCTs are needed in next step.

“…The remaining 117 articles were read in full, of which further 91 reviews had to be excluded (figure 1). Reasons for exclusion comprised 55 reviews where newer and/or more comprehensive reviews on higher quality evidence were available 50–104. Further 15 reviews have to be excluded as they systematically summarised evidence but did not perform a meta-analysis mostly due to clinical heterogeneity or a limited number of available RCTs 105–119.…”

“…Moreover, shuganjieyu plus venlafaxine had significantly higher response and remission rates than venlafaxine alone, and was superior to venlafaxine in terms of average change from baseline on the treatment-emergent symptom scale. 68 The capsule was also effective and safe in the treatment of geriatric depression. 69 …”

“…Another study [88] further reported that, like SJW, the ginsenosides can attenuate the symptoms of depression. Shuganjieyu capsules (main components are SJW and acanthopanax) are also an effective herbal product for treating mild and moderate depression in China [89]. Importantly, another extracted drug from TCM, Morinda officinalis oligose [90], has been approved by the CFDA to treat MDD with safety and tolerability.…”
