Shoulder Muscle Activation Levels During Exercises With Axial and Rotational Load on Stable and Unstable Surfaces

Abstract: This study evaluated the effects of instability on the EMG activity of scapular stabilizing and upper limb muscles during exercises with axial and rotational load. Twenty male volunteers (20.9 ± 1.8 years, 174.1 ± 0.04 cm, 73.17 ± 8.77 kg) experienced in strength training participated in a crossover design. Muscle activation of anterior deltoid (AD), posterior deltoid (PD), pectoralis major (PM), biceps brachii (BB), triceps brachii (TB), upper trapezius (UT), middle trapezius (MT), lower trapezius (LT), and s… Show more

“…Each participant visited the laboratory on two occasions, set apart by a minimum of 48 h to avoid the effects of muscle fatigue [ 10 ]. For each visit, the subjects were instructed to avoid strenuous exercise involving the upper body for 48 h before testing.…”

“…All participants visited the Fitness Centre two times during the five-week study period. These visits were separated with a minimum of 2 days to avoid muscle fatigue effects [20]. The first session was used to familiarize the participants and determine the load lifted in a maximum repetition (1RM) in the bench press exercise, while the second test session was used for electromyographic recording of the muscles to evaluate the bench press in two situations: 1) with the feet on the ground and the hips in a neutral position on the bench; and 2) with the hips and knees flexed at 90°.…”

“…Other studies have compared the muscle activation level of the bench press with other exercises, machines, and/or equipment for muscle conditioning [1315]. Finally, other studies have evaluated the muscle activation according to the stability/instability of the surface when the bench press is executed [1620]. Although, all of them have focused on the instability caused on the supporting surface of the body, using a balance cushion [16, 20] or a Swiss ball [16, 17, 19].…”

“…Muscle activation intensity is the mean value of muscle activation during the exercise cycle. In this experiment, the RMS value of EMG was used to express the muscle activation intensity [29]. The RMS of the target muscle in each task was calculated as follows:…”
