Should we be anxious when assessing anxiety using the Beck Anxiety Inventory in clinical insomnia patients?

Abstract: Assessing for clinical levels of anxiety is crucial, as comorbid insomnias far outnumber primary insomnias (PI). Such assessment is complex since those with Anxiety Disorders (AD) and those with PI have overlapping symptoms. Because of this overlap, we need studies that examine the assessment of anxiety in clinical insomnia groups. Participants (N = 207) were classified as having insomnia: 1) without an anxiety disorder (I-ND), or 2) with an anxiety disorder (I-AD). Mean Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) item respo… Show more

“…Fifth, clinical interview and BAI and BDI were used, instead of a structured interview, in the diagnosis of mental disorders in comorbid groups; the accuracy of the diagnosis might not be optimal. The usefulness of the BDI‐II for detecting clinically significant depression in those with insomnia has been evidenced in a study; however, using BAI in comorbid insomnia patients was shown to be suboptimal in sensitivity and specificity . The authors suggested a cautious attitude should be taken when applying BAI in this population.…”

“…An extract of the sleep questionnaires is presented in Supplementary Table 1 (in the online-only Data Supplement). We also evaluated the patients using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), 17 Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), 18 and Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS). 19 BDI and BAI consist of 21 items, with each scored from 0 to 3, where a score of 3 is the worst, while AIS comprises 8 questions scored in the same way.…”
