Should the probabilities count?

Abstract: When facing a choice between saving one person and saving many, some people have argued that fairness requires us to decide without aggregating numbers; rather we should decide by coin toss or some form of lottery, or alternatively we should straightforwardly save the greater number but justify this in a non-aggregating contractualist way. This paper expands the debate beyond well-known number cases to previously under-considered probability cases, in which not (only) the numbers of people, but (also) the prob… Show more

“…Autonomous vehicle behaviour is informed and governed by several forms of ethical decision-making algorithms (Leben 2017). In healthcare, there are broader issues with automated resource allocation, prioritization, benefit/loss dilemmas, and consequent existential threats (Kose and Pavaloiu 2017) with risk assessment algorithms employed in decision-making (Rasmussen 2012;Nagler, van den Hoven, and Helbing 2018). Human input is needed as an active veto (Verghese, Shah, and Harrington 2018) to avoid automated decisions resulting in unfair outcomes (Broome 1990).…”

“…The bleakest of issues that prompt concern about distributive justice is what one ought to do when several people's lives are at stake and the fact that some of them will have to die whatever we do. K. B. Rasmussen () examines claims that what justice requires is the choice between saving only a few people or saving many people. In the debate about so‐called ‘number cases’, some theorists have proposed non‐aggregational decision methods, such as coin‐tosses and lotteries, to be fair or just.…”
