Should patients with adult GH deficiency receive GH replacement?

Abstract: This is an invited debate between the three authors, who present their opinions in two separate sections. The first section is authored by Jens O L Jorgensen and Gudmundur Johannsson both of whom recommend GH replacement (pro), whereas Ariel Barkan, who authors the second section, is against (contra). Pro (J O L Jørgensen and G Johannsson)'Against stupidity, the gods themselves battle in vain.' (From The Maid of Orleans, a tragedy by Friedrich Schiller) 'My mind is made up. Don't confuse me with the facts.' (U… Show more

“…Even if studies revising the safety of the long-term therapy with rGH did not show an increased incidence of cancer, 132 the presence of an active neoplasia contraindicates the use of the rGH. 133 Finally, in women oral estrogen causes liver resistance to rGH therapy, and therefore use of transdermal estrogen is recommended if GH replacement is prescribed. 43 …”

Figyelemre méltó továbbá, hogy hor-monálisan inaktív hypophysisadenoma talaján kialakult hypopituitarismus esetében a napi 20 mg-ot meghaladó hidrokortizon-szubsztitúciónak a mortalitásra kifejtett kedvezőtlen hatását két vizsgálatban is alátámasztották [57,67,68].…”

Despite this success, controversial issues remain, and not all indications are approved in all countries 1,2 .…”
