“…27 The nursing profession, with approximately 28 million workers, is the largest group of health workers and is the largest and fastest growing labor sector in the world, especially for women. 28 For children, nursing is still a mostly feminine profession, 28,29 which can be evidenced by the fact that, although the participants in the study recognize the male figure as part of the profession, most of the drawings made are of nurses, as evidenced by the Mexican children in their drawings. 30 In a review of the historical evolution of nursing in Chile, the inclusion of men in the profession began in 1966, with the graduation of the first male nurse in the country.…”

“…The image perception of society towards the nursing profession has a significant impact on young people choosing the nursing profession (Glerean et al., 2017; Mao et al., 2021). Predictions of an insufficient nursing workforce in the near future could be reversed (Ministry of Health of Turkey, 2020; Moore et al., 2020) with a rise in the number of male nurses (Kronsberg et al., 2018; Moore et al., 2020). Interventions such as male nursing students’ voluntary activities used in this study may persuade more men to choose careers in nursing, contributing significantly to raising the nurse workforce to a sufficient level (International Council of Nurses, 2022a, 2022b).…”

“…Some of the main reasons young people do not choose this profession include challenging working circumstances, shift work and poor status of the profession in society (Glerean et al., 2017; Turale et al., 2021). An inadequate nursing workforce situation is faced by many countries, and it is predicted that this inadequacy will increase in the coming years (Ministry of Health of Turkey, 2020; Moore et al., 2020). One strategy to address this crisis is to increase the proportion of male nurses (Kronsberg et al., 2018; Moore et al., 2020).…”

“…Attracting more men into nursing and reducing their attrition would help alleviate the nursing shortage ( Brady and Sherrod, 2003 ), and gender diversity would help modern nursing evolve ( Sullivan, 2000 ). However, nursing schools get very few male students, and male nursing students are likelier to leave the nursing profession than female nursing students ( McLaughlin et al, 2010 ; Moore et al, 2020 ). Moreover, male nurses have a lower professional identity than female nurses ( Liu et al, 2022 ), and professional identity is essential in their intentions to leave the profession ( Sabanciogullari and Dogan, 2015 ).…”
