Although surface water quality and its underlying processes vary over time scales ranging from seconds to decades, they have historically been studied at the lower (weekly to interannual) frequencies. The aim of this study was to investigate intradaily variability of three water quality parameters in a small freshwater tidal lagoon (Mildred Island, California). High frequency time series of specific conductivity, water temperature, and chlorophyll a at two locations within the habitat were analyzed in conjunction with supporting hydrodynamic, meteorological, biological, and spatial mapping data. All three constituents exhibited large amplitude intradaily (e.g., semidiurnal tidal and diurnal) oscillations, and periodicity varied across constituents, space, and time. Like other tidal embayments, this habitat is influenced by several processes with distinct periodicities including physical controls, such as tides, solar radiation, and wind, and biological controls, such as photosynthesis, growth, and grazing. A scaling approach was developed to estimate individual process contributions to the observed variability. Scaling results were generally consistent with observations and together with detailed examination of time series and time derivatives, revealed specific mechanisms underlying the observed periodicities, including interactions between the tidal variability, heating, wind, and biology. The implications for monitoring were illustrated through subsampling of the data set. This exercise demonstrated how quantities needed by scientists and managers (e.g., mean or extreme concentrations) may be misrepresented by low frequency data and how short-duration high frequency measurements can aid in the design and interpretation of temporally coarser sampling programs. The dispersive export of chlorophyll a from the habitat exhibited a fortnightly variability corresponding to the modulation of semidiurnal tidal currents with the diurnal cycle of phytoplankton variability, demonstrating how high frequency interactions can govern long-term trends. Process identification, as through the scaling analysis here, can help us anticipate changes in system behavior and adapt our own interactions with the system.

The study of river water quality plays an important role in assessing the pollution status and health of the water bodies. Human-induced activities such as domestic activities, aquaculture, agriculture and industries have detrimentally affected the river water quality. Pinang River is one of the important rivers in Balik Pulau District that supplies freshwater for human consumption. A total of 442 physical and chemical parameters data of the Pinang River, Balik Pulau catchment were analysed to determine the sources of pollutants entering the river. Non-supervised artificial neural network (ANN) was employed to classify and cluster the river into upstream, middle-stream and downstream zones. The monitored data and non-supervised ANN analysis demonstrated that the source of nitrate was derived from the upper part of the Pinang River, Balik Pulau while the sources of nitrite, ammonia and ortho-phosphate are predominant at the middle-stream of the river system. Meanwhile, the sources of high total suspended solid and biological oxygen demand were concentrated at the downstream of the river.

Portsmouth Harbour was used to investigate the effects of fresh water flow and water physiochemical properties such as salinity on turbidity and dissolved oxygen within industrialised Macrotidal estuaries. Nine sites were selected within the harbour for field sampling and data collection based on their contrasting hydrodynamic environment and accessibility from land.Sediment, water samples and water physio-chemical data were collected from the harbour once every season over a period of two years. Fresh water flow directly affects turbidity as an increase in fresh water flow leads to a decrease in turbidity. Increasing fresh water flow also leads to seaward transport of Suspended particulate matter. There is no significant migration of the estuarine turbidity maxima zone within Portsmouth Harbour due to the general low fresh water flow (average yearly flow of 0.6m 3 /s) for all seasons unlike other Macrotidal estuaries. The area of intertidal flats have low dissolved oxygen ranging from about 4.5mg/L to 10.4mg/L compared to other areas within the harbour which ranged from 6.5mg/L to 12.5mg/L. This is due to the substantial amount of sediment supplied by bed forms such as runnels on the intertidal flats into receiving waters. Based on these findings, there is need for a synchronised management system within these type of estuaries.
