SUMMARY: Bacterial abundance, biomass and heterotrophic activity, along with hydrographic and phytoplankton variables, were measured from February 1998 to September 1999 at two coastal stations off A Coruña (Galicia, NW Spain). Bacterial abundance varied from 0.1 to 1.8 x 10 6 cells ml -1 and water-column integrated bacterial production ranged from 34 to 1132 mg C m -2 d -1 . Two annual maxima of bacterial abundance and production were observed, in spring and summer, although relatively high abundance values remained until autumn. In autumn and winter production values were low with the exception of the results obtained in November 1998, when the highest values of bacterial production of the whole study were observed at both stations. Bacterial biomass constituted a significant, but low, fraction of particulate organic carbon (4-21 %) and was always lower than phytoplankton biomass (up to 40% of phytoplankton carbon). Also, bacterial production was generally < 30% of primary production, but in some situations (as in early spring or in autumn) bacterial production exceeded primary production, suggesting a delayed response of bacterial activity after a phytoplankton bloom.Key words: bacterial production, bacterial abundance, phytoplankton biomass, primary production, phytoplankton blooms, NW Spain. RESUMEN: VARIACIONES EN LA BIOMASA Y PRODUCCIÓN DE LAS BACTERIAS PLANCTÓNICAS, Y EN LAS PROLIFERACIONES DE FITOPLANCTON ENLA COSTA DE A CORUÑA (NO ESPAÑA). -Se midió la abundancia, biomasa y actividad heterotrófica bacteriana, junto con variables hidrográficas y fitoplanctónicas, entre febrero de 1998 y septiembre de 1999 en dos estaciones costeras de A Coruña (Galicia, NO España). La abundancia bacteriana varió entre 0.1 y 1.8 x 10 6 células ml -1 y la producción bacteriana integrada en la columna de agua tomó valores entre 34 y 1132 mg C m -2 d -1 . Se observaron dos máximos de abundancia y producción bacteriana en primavera y verano, aunque se mantuvieron valores relativamente altos de abundancia durante el otoño. En otoño e invierno los valores de producción fueron bajos con la excepción de los resultados obtenidos en noviembre de 1998, donde se observaron los mayores valores de producción de todo el estudio en ambas estaciones. La biomasa bacteriana constituyó una fracción significativa, aunque baja, del carbono orgánico particulado (4-21%) y fue siempre menor que la biomasa del fitoplancton (hasta un 40% del carbono fitoplanctónico). Abstract. The aim of this research was to make the first depth profiles of the microbial assimilation of methanol carbon and its oxidation to carbon dioxide and use as an energy source from the microlayer to 1000 m. Some of the highest reported methanol oxidation rate constants of 0.5-0.6 d −1 were occasionally found in the microlayer and immediately underlying waters (10 cm depth), albeit these samples also showed the greatest heterogeneity compared to other depths down to 1000 m. Methanol uptake into the particulate phase was exceptionally low in microlayer samples, suggesting that any methanol utilised by microbes in this environment is for energy generation. The sea surface microlayer and 10 cm depth also showed a higher proportion of bacteria with a low DNA content, and bacterial leucine uptake rates in surface microlayer samples were either less than or the same as those in the underlying 10 cm layer. The average methanol oxidation and particulate rates were however statistically the same throughout the depths sampled, although the latter were highly variable in the near-surface 0.25-2 m compared to deeper depths. The statistically significant relationship demonstrated between uptake of methanol into particles and bacterial leucine incorporation suggests that many heterotrophic bacteria could be using methanol carbon for cellular growth. On average, methanol bacterial growth efficiency (BGE m ) in the top 25 m of the water column is 6 % and decreases with depth. Although, for microlayer and 10 cm-depth samples, BGE m is less than the near-surface 25-217 cm, possibly reflecting increased environmental UV stress resulting in increased maintenance costs, i.e. energy required for survival. We conclude that microbial methanol uptake rates, i.e. loss from seawater, are highly variable, particularly close to the seawater surface, which could significantly impact upon seawater concentrations and hence the air-sea flux.

Interactions between dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and bacterioplankton were examined during a diatom and Phaeocystis bloom in the Santa Barbara Channel (SBC) over five days following an upwelling event.The SBC was heterogeneous in physical state (recently upwelled vs. more stratified), nutrient concentration, and productivity, encompassing phytoplankton physiological states from a healthy bloom through the onset of silicon stress. DOC accumulated in the upper 10 m over the bloom, with compositional shifts indicated by chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) parameters. DOC bioavailability and bacterial growth and community composition responses were assessed with dilution batch-culture bioassays. In these experiments, bacterioplankton DOC usage increased over the bloom, with uptake of 1.5-5.3 lmol L 21 over three days, 1.5-5.7 lmol L 21 over one week, and 1.8-10.8 lmol L 21 over 10 weeks. DOC removal was poorly correlated with traditional proxies of bioavailability (chlorophyll a concentration, elemental ratios of dissolved organic matter, and CDOM). However, bacterial growth efficiency (BGE) was strongly related to in situ conditions, with higher BGEs on fresher, late-bloom DOC. After 10 weeks, 1.6-15.7 lmol L 21 of the DOC that accumulated during the bloom remained unutilized in the bioassays, with higher concentrations of persistent DOC in experiments from senescent bloom physiological states, supporting the putative relationship between phytoplankton blooms and seasonal DOC accumulation in the field. These experiments demonstrate that DOC released by the plankton community during a bloom fuels increased short-term and long-term bacterial activity, enhances presumed trophic transfer via increased BGEs, and leads to the accumulation of persistent, potentially exportable, DOC.
