Short-Term Responses of Aquatic and Terrestrial Biodiversity to Riparian Restoration Measures Designed to Control the Invasive Arundo donax L.

Abstract: Invasive species are among the top five causes of biodiversity loss worldwide. Arundo donax has progressively colonized the riparian zones of Mediterranean rivers with detrimental effects on terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity, being catalogued as one of the 100 worst invasive species. In order to control this invasive species and restore native riparian vegetation, different methods have been traditionally used, depending on the environmental, economic and social context. Here, the effect of repeated above-g… Show more

“…Native riparian vegetation consists of both European and Ibero-African flora (Salix spp., Fraxinus angustifolia, Populus spp., Tamarix spp., Nerium oleander) (Bruno et al 2014b). Invasive giant reed Arundo donax, is widespread on riverbanks in midlands and lowlands, but currently controlled by applying soft-engineering techniques in the framework of LIFE13BIO/ES/001407 RIPISILVANATURA project (Bruno et al 2019).…”

“…Comprende un tramo de más de 50 km (Figura 1), desde el límite provincial con Albacete (unión del río Segura y río Mundo, en el municipio de Calasparra) hasta el municipio de Cieza. Esta zona se caracteriza geológicamente por la presencia de sustratos calizos, areniscas, margas y yesos, así como por tener una precipitación media anual aproximada de 300 mm y una temperatura media anual de 17 º C (Bruno et al, 2019b).…”

“…Further, Ar. donax causes displacement of native riparian vegetation and riparian-associated fauna [ 10 ], including sensitive wildlife species [ 11 , 12 , 13 ]. Conventional weed treatments have been implemented across its invasive range [ 14 ] but are expensive and entail extensive collateral damage in sensitive ecosystems [ 15 ].…”
