“…There are populations of V. vinifera subsp. sylvestris inhabiting natural saline environments, such as arid and coastal areas, from which several accessions have been collected for salt tolerance trials, performed by applying saline irrigation on individuals obtained through clonal propagation (Askri et al 2012, Baneh et al 2014, Popescu et al 2015. Some of these wild varieties showed less growth reduction and lower Na + accumulation than commercial rootstocks such as 140 Ruggeri [when the comparison is made with these vines planted in sand-perlite in pots (Popescu et al 2015)], which suggests they may have some utility for breeding salt tolerant rootstocks, especially if they also demonstrate similar salt tolerance capabilities when cultivated in field.…”
