Short-term outcomes after distal pancreatectomy: Laparotomy vs. laparoscopy – A single-center series

Abstract: h i g h l i g h t sLaparoscopy has been recently used more frequently for distal pancreatectomy. Postoperative complications and oncologic outcomes were similar in this study. Length of stay was shorter for the patients operated by laparoscopy. Laparoscopy should be offered when technically feasible. a r t i c l e i n f o Conclusion: Short-term outcomes after open and laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy regarding postoperative complications and mortality were similar, but length of stay was significantly shorte… Show more

“…2,3 In contrast, the incidence of post-operative morbidity has remained relatively high at approximately 15-40% following hepatectomy [4][5][6] and 28-52% after pancreatectomy. [7][8][9] Most complications are rare, but some, like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), collectively referred to as venous thromboembolism (VTE), occur more commonly. Moreover, VTE can occur in 3-5% of patients after hepatectomy and pancreatectomy, with some of these events happening after hospital discharge.…”
