Short-term manpower planning for MRT carriage maintenance under mixed deterministic and stochastic demands

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to develop two manpower supply planning models and a solution algorithm for mass rapid transit carriage maintenance under mixed deterministic and stochastic demands. These models are formulated as mixed integer programs that are characterized as NP-hard. We employ problem decomposition techniques, coupled with the CPLEX mathematical programming solver, to develop an algorithm that is capable of efficiently solving the problems. The models and the method used currently in actual … Show more

“…Exploratory models are the analytical tools used to predict the change in the labor system in response to stationary situations. The commonly used exploratory models include renewal models (Chen et al., 2018; De Feyter et al., 2017), Markov (cross‐sectional) models (Di Francesco et al., 2016; Dimitriou & Georgiou, 2019; Knorzer, 2000), and semi‐Markov models (Bastian et al., 2020; Chattopadhyay & Gupta, 2007; Song & Huang, 2008). Moreover, previous studies introduced dynamic programming in a Markov model to generate optimal recruitment and transition patterns to meet various needs in labor requirements and service levels (Dimitriou & Tsantas, 2010).…”

“…The model tested on Dutch railways gives effective results. Chen et al ( 2010 ) modeled Taiwan railways maintenance personnel planning as stochastic and deterministic. The solution of the model is evaluated with simulation and solved with real-life data.…”

“…Fokkert et al ( 2007) have developed a mixed integer programming approach to reduce the number of night hours and workloads of personnel on Dutch urban railways. Chen et al (2010) have proposed a Mixed Integer programming approach to the problem in order to minimize personnel costs in Taiwan's urban railways. Gorman and Kanet (2010) have developed an integer programming model in order to minimize the duty costs in the US freight rail network.…”
