Short Term Frequency Stability Tests of Two Cryogenic Sapphire Oscillators

Abstract: Ultra-high short-term frequency stability has been realized in microwave oscillators based on liquid helium cooled sapphire resonators which operate on the same Whispering Gallery mode. Two cryogenic sapphire oscillators were built to evaluate their stability at short averaging times. These oscillators exhibited a fractional frequency stability of 1.1×10-15 at an averaging time of 1 s, which is more than 100 times better than that of a hydrogen maser. For averaging times between 2 and 640 s the measured oscill… Show more

“…The characteristics of our liquid-helium cooled CSOs is briefly reviewed below [8]. Three high quality (HEMEX grade) sapphire crystals from Crystal Systems were cut and polished cylindrically with a height of 30 mm and a diameter of 50 mm ( Fig.1(a)), and are used as electromagnetic resonators.…”

“…The crystal2 was used for the cryoCSO1. The loaded Q-factor and coupling on the primary reflection port were re-measured to be Q L =5×10 8 and β 1 * =0.51, respectively. The incident power on the resonator and modulation index were set to 100 μW and 0.2 rad, respectively.…”

“…11,12 At least 20 prototypes of such oscillator have been implemented for primary metrology and physical experiments, [13][14][15][16] in which the sapphire is cooled in a large liquid-He Dewar flask. The liquid He requires refilling every 3-4 weeks, and also senses the atmospheric pressure.…”

“…Cryogenic sapphire oscillators have been deployed to a number of frequency standards labs [5], [6] and have facilitated atomic fountain clocks reaching a performance limited only by quantum projection noise [7]. Since most atomic fountain clocks [8] have significant dead time in their interrogation cycle, simply due to the fact that they are pulsed devices where one has to wait until the detection process is finished before the next cloud of cold atoms is launched, it is impossible to avoid influences of the Dick effect [9]- [12].…”
