“…29,30 It should be noted that several earlier Doppler studies did not observe results consistent with increased cerebral vascular resistance. [31][32][33] Further studies such as direct flow measurements of fetal cerebral blood flow under maternal hyperoxia would allow assessment of this hypothesis.…”

“…Recordings were made from different fetal extra-and intracardiac districts including umbilical artery, tho racic descending aorta, renal artery, middle cerebral artery, ascending aorta, pulmonary artery and inferior vena cava. The technique followed to record velocity waveforms from these vessels has been reported else where [6.10,14], At the level of fetal middle cerebral artery, record ings were obtained before and after 15 min of oxygen administration with the mother still breathing oxygen (oxygen test), a time interval corresponding on the basis of our previous experience to the maximum fetal vascular response [15]. Oxygen was administered to the mother lying in a comfortable semirecumbent posi tion at 8 1/min through a face mask delivering 60% humidified oxygen.…”

“…Nicolaides et al [13] gave a direct demon stration of these findings showing a rise in fetal oxygenation at the end of a 10-min maternal oxygen treatment. In IUGR fetuses these modifications of fetal oxygenation cause changes in fetal vascular resistances at the cerebral [5] and descending aorta [5,13] levels which may affect the cardiac afterload of the left and right ventricles, respectively.…”

“…Oxygen was administered to the mother for 20 min through a face mask delivering about 60% humidified oxygen [5]. Recordings were obtained at 5-min intervals before, during (5, 10, 15 and 20 min) and after (20, 30, 35 and 40 min) maternal oxygen administration.…”
