Short-term Effects of Artificial Tears on Visual Performance in Normal Subjects

Abstract: These results suggest that Liquigel and Celluvisc alter the tear layer and affect contrast sensitivity. The results agree with patient observations that Celluvisc causes a moderate amount of blur that gradually subsides. In such patients, the shorter duration of blur with Liquigel (about half that of Celluvisc) may be more acceptable. The technique of blending various viscosity CMC materials while maintaining the total CMC concentration of 1.0% may be beneficial in dry eye therapy without causing excessive blu… Show more

“…Several clinical studies support the hypothesis that increased aberration as a result of a tear film disruption may reduce retinal image quality [5,6,7,8,9,10]. This fact is supported by the finding that instillation of artificial tears in dry eyes reduces the optical aberrations and increases the optical quality of the retinal images [11,12,13]. …”

“…Montes-Mico et al [5, 7] found that in normal eyes after a blink there is initially a fairly rapid decrease in the aberrations associated with the anterior surface of the tear film as the tear film stabilizes and becomes smoother, followed by a gradual increase as evaporation causes the tear film to become more irregular and to start to break up. There are studies that report improvements with the use of artificial tear solutions in the visual performance of patients with dry eye [11,12,13]. Eyes with abnormal tear film function have been found to show larger optical aberrations than normal eyes, because of the greater degree of irregularity in the tear film.…”

“…48,49 Instillation of eye drops can cause alterations in the tear film, possibly inducing some temporal changes in optical quality. [50][51][52] Several previous studies have reported a short-term effect of artificial tear drops on corneal topographic data 16,53-57 and corneal or ocular HOAs 58-65 in normal and dry eyes. Certain artificial tear components may contribute to a transient decrease in optical quality after the instillation of artificial tears.…”

“…8 Measures of visual quality after instillation of artificial tears have been concerned primarily with the negative impact of the tears immediately after instillation. 7,9 Studies measuring improvements in contrast sensitivity typically have tested subjects in a very short time period (e.g., 10 minutes or less). 6,10 Longer term (weeks) effects of artificial tear instillation have been studied, and improvements in contrast sensitivity noted.…”
