Short-term Dietary Interventions for the Management of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver

Abstract: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects millions of individuals on a global scale and currently no gold standard treatment exists. The risk of developing NAFLD is considerably higher with increasing body mass index. Consequently, weight loss should be recommended to all overweight patients with fatty liver. However, lifestyle interventions, irrespective of weight status, may also influence the condition. The aim herein is to present examples of short-term interventions (of up to 16 weeks) which asses… Show more

“…Also, overconsumption of simple sugars increased the intrahepatic TG content (+ 33%) by stimulating DNL (+ 98%). In a review by Stokes et al [ 84 ], short-term hypocaloric diets (up to 16 wk) have shown beneficial effects in reducing intrahepatic lipid content. Also, research supports that carbohydrate restriction and consumption of unsaturated fatty acids have efficacious metabolic effects in NAFLD[ 12 , 81 , 84 ].…”

“…onalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), one of the most prevalent liver diseases worldwide, is closely associated with metabolic diseases, such as obesity, dyslipidemia and type 2 diabetes (T2D) (1,2). It is well recognized that chronic intake of Western-style diet rich in fat and sugar is a major factor responsible for the development of NAFLD (1)(2)(3). However, the mechanisms contributing to the development and progression of NAFLD under high-fat (Western) diet condition have never been fully clarified.…”
