Short Stature and Functional Impairment

Abstract: While, on average, children with short stature score lower than their peers on functional tests, few short children scored outside the normal range. Furthermore, there is no evidence to explain the cause of any deficits, and limited data suggest that treatment of short stature does not improve children's functional status. Nevertheless, treatment may be warranted in children with severe short stature to alleviate restrictions on activities of daily living. Further research focusing on physical limitations due … Show more

“…Around 50% of the children requiring RRT before their 13th birthday grew to a final height below the third percentile. A fifth of patients with childhoodonset ESRD attained an adult height more than 3 SDs below the mean, a degree of stunting highly likely to affect social integration and quality of life (5,6,30). These growth outcomes are in keeping with data of the NAPRTCS registry (8); the slightly better mean adult height SDS figures in the North American Registry (21.46 versus 21.65 in this study) are largely explained by differences in the reference datasets (26), whereas absolute heights were almost identical to or even slightly better than those in the NAPRTCS (girls, 154 cm; boys, 166 cm) and our registry (girls, 155 cm; boys, 168 cm).…”

“…The literature review showed that HrQoL in youths with ISS or GHD was comparable to the general population [9,12,13,14]. This is possibly because the measures commonly employed in such research were generic in nature and the impact of physical development on HrQoL may have been underestimated or not taken into consideration at all.…”

“…In a review limited to children with SS (as the major diagnosis), Wheeler et al [9] concluded that short children scored lower than their peers on intelligence tests, academic achievement and behavioral adaptation, but the scores fell within the normative range (1 SD). Deficits for youths with SS were reported in visual-motor skills as well as psychological, educational and behavioral functioning [9]. Nonetheless, it remains unclear whether the deficits are the consequence of an underlying condition causing SS, or cognitive and psychological sequelae.…”

“…Однако за последующие годы были накоплены и другие сведения, опровергающие данные утверждения и свидетельствующие об отсутствии когнитивных и поведенческих проблем у здоровых низкорослых детей [19]. Иными словами, в большинстве исследований было доказано, что отставание в росте у детей без дефицита СТГ не 107 имеет статистически значимого негативного влияния на их когнитивные способности, психику и социальную адаптацию [20].…”
