Short-Radius Horizontal Drilling System Optimization in Yates Field Unit Provides Excellent Directional Control and Highly Economical Completions

Abstract: Summary Yates field unit in Pecos County, Texas, has recently drilled its 100th short-radius horizontal drainhole. The program has been a technical and economic success for the field, providing efficient completions in this highly fractured reservoir. In the early stages of the program (1986 1990), short-radius drilling in Yates field unit was performed using strictly rotary drilling systems. In 1992, Odorisio and Curtis1 reported on the introduction of articulated downhole … Show more

“…The previously described semi-analytical model is used, with some assumptions and simplifications, to investigate the influences of length, distance, angle and number of branches on the multilateral well productivity, as well as the sensitivity relations among the parameters [4][5][6]. The assumptions and simplifications are: ① the branches are located in the middle positions of the main hole and are arranged as staggered, ② the angles between each branch and the main hole are the same in a well.…”

“…With its unique advantages of environmental protection and efficiency, the high-pressure water jet is widely used in quarry rock breaking, coal seam drilling, oil drilling, geothermal mining, and deep-sea shallow drilling [1,2]. This technology can not only avoid or greatly reduce formation damage caused by the conventional perforation technique, but can also penetrate the Processes 2023, 11, 2165 2 of 19 contaminated areas in the near-well zone for improved oil drainage and production in the oil layer, thereby increasing crude oil production [3][4][5].…”
