Short interval between two Pap smears: effect on the result of the second smear? A prospective randomized trial

Abstract: We document a tendency towards a more benign outcome without statistical significance in the second smear. Inter-observer variability of different cytopathologists is high and should be kept in mind when evaluating cytology results.

“…Their study was performed on women undergoing routine screening, while our study assessed women who had already undergone routine screening and were referred to follow‐up. It has been suggested that performing multiple cervical cell collection procedures on the same patient in a short period of time has a tendency to increase false‐negative results because it may take several weeks for abnormal epithelial tissues to recover and yield a sufficient quantity of abnormal cells to be detected at follow‐up 29 . This could contribute to the lower sensitivity observed in our study, in which the period between referral cytology and collection of our samples was about 84 days.…”

The Wong et al 16 study also implemented a score category in which an abnormal score result was treated as a positive test.…”

“…Samples from this study were collected at the time of colposcopy and the mean time interval between referral cytology result and sample collection was close to 3 months. It has been suggested that sample collection for time intervals less than 3 months might increase the indicence of false‐negative results, 23 which could explain the lower sensitivity of HR‐HPV in this study.…”
