“…In an experimental study, the tumour cell kill was similar using 5 )/5 Gy and 10 )/3 Gy (2 daily fractions 6 hours apart) in 5 days, and superior to 10 )/3 Gy in 10 days [23]. Two of the clinical trials are published in this issue of Acta Oncologica [24,25]. These studies build upon the limited knowledge of the relations between fraction size, total dose and treatment time on the one hand and acute (tumour and normal tissue) and late toxicity on the other, as expressed in the so called 'biological models'.…”

“…The CHART study [24] is too small to evaluate antitumour activity, although 3 year locoregional control was good (95%). Acute toxicity was, as expected low, but one patient had to stop therapy due to nausea and vomiting (virtually never seen after 5 )/5 Gy [29,30], and two (10%) died postoperatively.…”

“…Biologically equivalent doses (in 2 Gy/fr) to 5 5 Gy I very much thank Dr Courdi for detecting the mistakes and uncertainties in the table in my editorial [1] and in the article by Brooks et al [2]. It is our responsibility to detect mistakes in submitted and accepted papers and definitely not to in an inattentive way replicate them.…”

“…To our knowledge, only one study has been reported attempting to integrate chemotherapy into SCPRT (5 x 5 Gy). 23 Hence, some investigators have modified SCPRT (5 x 5 Gy) to a hyperfractionated RT regimen with a view to reducing late effects, [39][40][41] and potentially integrating chemotherapy. A further study also modified SCPRT in rectal cancer to deliver twice-daily Extending the Interval to Surgery SCPRT followed by local excision of small, radioresponsive tumours in elderly patients achieves an acceptable LR rate.…”
