“…In the present study, there was no significant difference between vaccinated and unvaccinated sheep in urine PCR. Although renal colonization disappeared after four months (for all groups), this was most likely due to the intrinsic characteristics of the infecting strain (Guaricura FV52), since studies conducted on hamsters [ 13 ] and sheep [ 14 ] had demonstrated the tendency of an auto-limited renal infection of that strain. Indeed, the pathogenesis of that strain herein observed was very similar to that observed by Rocha et al [ 14 ].…”

“…After this, the isolate was transferred only once in EMJH medium for inoculum definition (10 8 leptospires/mL). This strain was chosen because it has already demonstrated its ability to colonize the uteri of hamsters [ 13 ] and sheep [ 14 ].…”

“…Additionally, this serogroup has been associated with reproductive failures [3,17], which means that Sejroe strains play a key role in the reproductive syndrome of bovine genital leptospirosis (BGL). Despite its adaptation to bovine, the importance of these strains can be attributed to the preference of Sejroe for colonizing the uterus [18]. The main serovars of this group are Hardjoprajitno (L. interrogans) and Hardjobovis (L. borgpetersenii) [14].…”

“…Although both HP and HB are considered to be the major strains associated Editor's Choice with this reproductive leptospirosis (Nally et al 2018;Di Azevedo et al 2020;Loureiro and Lilenbaum 2020), strains belonging to Leptospira santarosai speciesand also from Sejroe serogroup (Guaricura genotypes)have been frequently recovered from Brazilian bovines (Hamond et al 2015;Loureiro et al 2016Loureiro et al , 2017. Additionally, when inoculated in hamsters, Guaricura strains have been strongly associated with uterine infection (Pinto et al 2020). Despite a high number of Guaricura isolates obtained from bovines, the problem has not yet been specifically associated with low reproductive efficiency (Loureiro et al 2017).…”
