Short‐ and Long‐Term Effects of Training on Dental Hygiene Faculty Members’ Capacity to Write SOAP Notes

Abstract: Calibration among faculty is challenging to achieve and maintain. In this study, calibration refers to the training process by which standardization of chart documentation in a SOAP note format was achieved. In the SOAP format, chart entries by health care providers are written in the following categories: Subjective data, Objective data, Assessment, and Plans. “…Furthermore, instructors have the responsibilities of being both facilitators in learning and role models for students, which can be aided by formal educational training methods 3 . Studies in dental hygiene education found that, if new faculty members were not helped to acquire the knowledge and skills to effectively teach students, outcomes may include varying instructional methods and frustration due to unfamiliarity with academic policies and procedures 7 , 8 . “…As the participants stated, documenting may help improve treatment and client outcomes over time. Other health professions have indicated the importance of clinical notes in the effort to improve care and outcomes (Cillessen and de Vries Robbé, 2012;Jacks et al, 2008;Kibble et al, 2006;Mowery et al, 2012;Vadnais and Golen, 2011).…”

“…Issues in agreement and calibration have been recognized to be a cause of misperception and misunderstanding among dental students, which might affect their knowledge and acceptance of information. ( 2 , 3 ). Lanning and colleagues reported that dental students thought that variations and discrepancies in clinical evaluation between their supervisors and evaluators affected their clinical development ( 4 ).…”

“…Moreover, it was found that inconsistency between evaluators and clinical faculty staff disturbs the students’ confidence in their evaluators’ feedback, which in turn affects their tendency to progress and to attain better marks ( 5 ). Furthermore, these variations in clinical evaluation on a daily basis, might affect the dental students’ understanding of what standards of clinical skills and capability they need to achieve, to recognize and to amend ( 2 ). Schönwetter and coworkers ( 6 ) determined that bias associated with clinical assessment of dental student performance remains a cause of hindrance for both dental students as well as clinical evaluators.…”
